Liverpool-born mezzo-soprano, Meriel Cunningham is a recent graduate of The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees under the tutelage of John Evans.
Recent operatic highlights include Pastora (Dorilla in Tempe, Wexford Festival Opera 2019), (cover) Minerva (The Return of Ulysses, Royal Opera at The Roundhouse), The Muse/Nicklausse (The Tales of Hoffmann, Grimeborn Opera Festival), Mère Gerald (Dialogues des Carmélites, GSMD) and on tour for Charles Court Opera, Ruth (Ruddigore) and Bobstay the Boatswain (H.M.S. Pinafore).
A versatile performer, Meriel enjoys singing in a wide range of styles. Most recently she played Mary in Charles Court Opera’s 5-star reviewed A Nativity Panto, running at The King's Head Theatre over the 2019-20 festive period. Further experience in Musical Theatre includes performing as a featured soloist in An Evening on Broadway at Milton Court Theatre and in Guys&Dolls (Hot box girl) and
Crazy For You (Margie) both at Silk Street Theatre for GSMD.
Recent concert highlights include a recital of Kurt Weill Cabaret Songs at Barbican Hall and performing a selection of jazz standards with Derek Paravicini at St. John Smith Square for their ‘My Music’ concert series.
Upcoming in 2020, Meriel will continue to work with Charles Court Opera, playing the title role in their production of Iolanthe (King's Head Theatre, National G&S Festival and on tour) and Pittit-Sing in The Mikado (National G&S Festival and on tour). This autumn she is thrilled to be joining Opera Holloway to perform the title role in their touring production of Carmen.
